Toronto loves chicken wings! No longer merely an appetizer, chicken wings have become the focus of a night out for many hungry Torontonians. Foodies compile websites listing restaurants with wings deals,
and it seems that everyone you talk to has an opinion on where to get the best wings.
I'm fortunate enough to live in the Annex, about a block away from the venerable Brunswick House, and my neighbourhood is populated with several eateries that offer wings. Unfortunately, many of the wings on offer are substandard – gluey, soggy, or slathered with store-brand barbecue sauce. There are, however, a few restaurants that offer good quality wings.
How Hot Do You Like It?
One bar and grill in my neighbourhood offers a fantastic variety of wing flavours. If you decide to eat at this establishment, you'll need to get ready to make some decisions. First, they offer a choice between Original wings or Boneless ones. Wings come in four different categories: Dry Spice, Lightly Sauced, Saucy, or Very Saucy. Then comes the choice of marinated flavours – and what a selection it is! Here are some of the flavours on offer:
- Salt & Pepper,
- Mild Dry,
- Medium Dry,
- Hot Sweet Asian,
- Hot & Honey,
- Caribbean Jerk,
- Honey BBQ,
- Chili Lime,
- Mild Saucy,
- Medium Saucy,
- Sweet Asian BBQ,
- Buffalo Ranch,
- Honey Garlic,
- Garlic Parm,
- Hotter than Hell,
- Smoked BBQ Heat,
- and Authentic Buffalo.
Flavours are rated for heat, on a scale of zero to five.
The Extras and The Deals
Variety is obviously a major criterion for a great wings deal. Another element that comes into play is how the wings are served. Are there a few on a platter, or will you get a generous serving? Do the wings come with dipping sauce? Are they served with fries?
Finally, how are the prices? Chances are that you may discover a restaurant that offers special deals on wings, either a "Half-Price” special, or a combo that includes wings and beer, or wings and other foods. Sometimes wings specials are available for dining in or for takeout.
Something For Everyone
You may want to find a restaurant that boasts a variety of other foods, with starters, soups and salads, sandwiches, burgers, and mains like ribs or fish and chips. This way you will be comfortable in suggesting meeting friends or co-workers at the eatery, because you'll know that all tastes can be accommodated.
One of my favourite local restaurants is frequented by couples, families with children, groups of students, and sports fans, as well as neighbourhood regulars.
Finally, look for a restaurant that has a relaxed
, casual atmosphere. You should be able to watch the game or relax while you enjoy your wings. And friendly service is always welcome!
With a little luck, you'll discover the best wings in town!
